Kids & Parents Plastic Surgery:
We
all inherit certain traits from our parents, and sometimes
that's not always a good thing, see how one new trend in plastic
surgery has kids and parents getting the same procedure to
change what nature gave them.
Seventeen year-old Meghan of Hopkinton had her Mom's nose,
and she wanted to change that. Meghan, wanted her nose fixed.
"When you look in the mirror, that's what you see, like I look
in the mirror and I just see my nose". It's something Mom, Debra understood all too well. Debra, Meghan's mom,
"So for many many years I did nothing about it, until about 10
years ago, I couldn't live with it anymore and I decided to have
my nose done". And now her daughter is doing the same! Plastic surgeons say they see this a lot.
Dr. Sheldon Sevinor, plastic surgeon:
"A new trend in my practice is parents having a surgical
procedure and then their children having the same procedure
either at the same time or at a later date". But Doctors caution just because its good for the adult,
doesn't always make it ok for the child. Dr. Sheldon Sevinor, plastic surgeon,
"This is surgery, this is serious business, this isn't like
going to have your hair cut in a salon". "I feel that there's too much plastic surgery going on for
the wrong reasons, as well as a lot of plastic surgery going on
in teenagers that are not appropriate candidates". In Meghan's case, she says she's doing it to correct a
problem that's affected her confidence. Meghan, wanted her nose fixed
"I don't want to look like a movie star, I don't care what
anyone thinks , I just want to look the way that makes me feel
the most confident". And her Mom stands by her decision. Debra, Meghan's mom
"I support her totally, because if its going to make her feel
better, then that's what she should do". And her Doctor agrees. Dr. Sheldon Sevinor, plastic surgeon
"That's the goal in plastic surgery, is to make people feel
better about themselves to give them more confidence and self
esteem, but at the same time, they have to be happy in their own
skin". And remember, cosmetic surgery is still surgery, so make sure
to schedule a consultation and really discuss why you want a
specific procedure and all of your options to ensure it's the
right thing for you, and that you are doing it for the right
reasons.
